...as I remember it was God who ordered Abraham (or was it Jonah?) to take a knife to his son's throat...maybe he sent the same demand to this father....why not?

...and didn't this same exemplar of a God/parent order his own son's death?

This most recent incident merely follows a Judeo/Christian tradition: Fathers, kill thy sons, thy innocent sons.
