...for all his flaws he was the most remarkable man of his age. What was most impressive about him was his willingness to go against his own class interests...he was after all born at Blenheim Castle, a descendant of the Duke of Marlborough, about the most prestigious family in English history. Yet after WW I he and Lloyd George introduced bills to Parliament establishing most of the social welfare programs Roosevelt would later ruffle the feathers of his class by championing.

..The British government was shocked to see the extreme poor health of the recruits it depended upon to win that war for them, for that same upper class who so resented Churchill's program to improve the health of the common man and woman. This was in stark contrast to the healthy, outdoor-loving and health-conscious volk in Germany...

A nation needed a healthy and strong military if it was to survive...and so national health care, workman's compensation, unemployment benefits and old-age pensions were instituted, and fought against by the very wealthy who need protection most. It wasn't that Churchill was a bleeding heart liberal, or traitor to his class, but that he had the best interests of the entire country in mind and knew a strong people make for a strong nation...and that these things cost and that the wealthiest are in the best position to pay the bill.

It's a reality we don't seem to want to face....this country will lose ground to more socialist minded countries, so long as their socialism, unlike ours, is directed at the people and not the wealthy...the US is a good place to become a billionaire, by whatever means possible..it is not a good place to raise a family....although we rail against immigrants and now refugees, it will be these people who will form our strength, not our own spoiled, mostly white, brats.
