We, the barely religious, have let things go long enough. Not content with the respect we showed them all, Christian, Muslim and Jew…with the tax breaks we gave them etc. they have all begun to meddle far too much in our own affairs and the world in general…not as fellow-citizens but as guardians and then spokespeople of their religions….taking our polite lack of interest as a “threat” and an “attack” on the rightness of their beliefs, requiring a counter-attack from them, as one means of “defending” themselves and their religious beliefs.

The world would suffer nothing if all three religions sank forever in the ocean and were never heard from again. None of them, not a single one, has advanced the cause of “love” or peace or kindness…these things cannot be taught or legislated….indeed there is no need to. The urge to love is born with us…the most that is required from any outside agency is that it not impede or subvert the course of our own feelings. And whenever things threaten go wrong in a society, civil law, drawn up mostly according reasonable and logical precept, is more than adequate for the needs of social order and personal liberty.

These religions keep us shackled to ancient barbarisms we can ill afford as we generate more efficient weapons and ways to allow any one of them to achieve that ultimate goal their tribal gods set for them of world dominion in his holy name. We need less and then no religion…no organized religion that is…and none that aligns itself with the State and is used as a holy cover for holy terror.

One example will do well enough. Male circumcision and female infibulation are gross crimes committed against children through the ongoing sanction of religions which belong to another, more suitably barbaric age. They are a blight and a curse on any modern civilization as well as a primer course in how to overcome your natural feelings as a parent and loving human bean when confronted with the torment your religion or you allow to be done in the name of any god.

Male circumcision was instituted by barbaric Hebrews as a sign of a covenant with their god. It is a painful, debilitating experience that also deprives the male of sexual sensitivity. Any decently un-religious society would have outlawed it long ago…as we made all vivisection illegal. But because it is “religious” it is allowed to go on its merry way, permanently scarring and maiming innocent children. Female infibulation(cutting away the clitoris and sewing the vagina shut) was not an original part of Islam but was added later and only in a few locales…but it too is excused as being something a god wants. Both of these are serious blots against the character of all of us….for allowing these people to run counter to our civil laws which seek to protect innocent lives, children especially.

And no doubt, had the breaking and binding of Chinese girls’ feet been for religious rather than “esthetic” reasons, the world would still tolerate this horrific crime to be visited on innocent girls.

And the rest of the practices and beliefs of these religions are all of the same order. Whatever good there is in them existed in the hearts of people already and was made a part of civil law long ago….what remains is what runs counter to civil law, common sense and human decency too.
