...I´ve quoted extensively from this book, "The Bible and the Ancient Near East"....in a recent re-reading I was struck by this paragraph...

"The Jews and other national groups that were now part of the Babylonian Empire no longer had any political power. They were even losing their national languages and adopting Aramaic. Exile, trade and service in the Babylonian army and government also resulted in some intermarriage. Yet people tended to call themselves by their ancestors´nationality. Thus there were still the Judeans, albeit without political power, without their own soil, without their own spoken language. Such nationalities resolved themselves into RELIGIOUS COMMUNITIES (emphasis mine)." p.286

And that´s exactly what happened to the remnants of the Assyrians....who came under Babylonian and then Persian and then Greek and then Roman and then Arab rule...they lost all political power, they lost their language and they "resolved themselves into religiois communtities"....which is all they are to this day....but at least those Assyrians who adopted Islam once again grew to power and a national identity.
