There's a lot to admire in him, especially his taking on Norman Mailer and William Buckley and Nixon and the Vietnam War back in the day.

Watched a documentary, a talk really, about the Great Depression....Gore's grandfather was a Senator and knew all the players, as did a young Gore.

Something he said struck me as odd. He is, as was his family, Conservative but with a humane twist. Conservatives were very critical of the New Deal...they thought it was verging on what Hitler and Mussolini were doing; centralizing power in the hands of a single individual. Conservatives thought FDR was Communist but he claimed he saved Capitalism etc.

Vidal said the New Deal was a failure. Some people were helped by government programs but unemployment in the private sector remained the same....he said WW II brought full employment, not the New Deal..and ever since then presidents have kept us in perpetual war as a way to maintain employment.

There is truth to that but how is that Conservative? How is that "Free Market"? After all warmongers don't sell their products on the open market, or didn't then....they all got government contracts to make weapons, so how is that Free Market...how is that "private" enterprise? Boeing pays it's bills with government contracts, which means the money comes form us, which makes it welfare as much as the C.C.C. was.

The really nifty part is that after we, the dumb people, pay for the prototypes and the experiments and setting up the factories and machinery, these same bastards then sell US the planes and weapons, and not just us but they sell around the world...what is Free Enterprise about that?

Paying for weapons is just another government hand-out, welfare... only it goes to the wealthy....if they didn't get their money from our Taxes, Boeing couldn't build anything.

How is paying for wars with government checks Free Enterprise?
