I Believe Therefore It’s True

That many people, or even most people, or even everyone believes something doesn’t say any anything about the truth of what they believe in. It says more about what kind of people they are, what it takes for them to believe something. You may believe the earth is flat and cite for evidence that “everyone has always believed it”…but what has that to do with the shape of the planet? If there’s no consequence, no effect from your beliefs you could go on believing in them and where’s the harm? And although your belief in the flatness of the earth may keep you from ever venturing out to test it and you could use the security which comes from staying at home as “proof” of the soundness and correctness of that belief, you might die of boredom eventually confined to the flatness and limitations. of your physical and mental existence

You may believe that when thirsty you should pour water on your head, but as your thrist would continue unabated and soon become unbearable you’d be forced to start pouring it on your feet and arms and anywhere else till eventually you find satisfaction only when it’s put it to its proper use, so that some beliefs have a way of instantly being tested and replaced by a right belief and not just any belief.

Wrong beliefs may do the person preaching them some good but hardly any good will come to the person taught to believe in them. Telling someone that a magic talisman will make bullets harmless may do the mullah some good because he’ll have a reckless army, but his soldiers will suffer for it, even if they win the war…plus which he knows better all along so win or lose he comes out the safer. Those soldiers who believe what they were taught because “everyone knows it’s true” may survive that particular war but chances are they’ll go on being used until the day their luck runs out…you might say that such beliefs will get you eventually…and that since you’re going to get caught anyway, no matter how wrong or right your beliefs, what’s the difference…the difference is that you went to your rest with your eyes open so you at least enjoyed the scenery along the way and were not hustled to that inevitable end, for this life, blind as well as dumb.

That’s all Dr Joseph tried to do in his book…open our eyes a little so we could enjoy the ride.
