...there is a glaring inconsistency in almost all historical writing when it comes to evaluating the ancient Assyrians, in comparison to their neighbor empires.

Perpend...

"The crowning epic cycle in biblical historiography is the Hebrew ´Shanameh´, the Epic of Kings celebrating the rise of the monarchy that under Saul stood up to the Philistine tyrrany, and under David shook off the yoke of tyranny and achieved the GLORY of EMPIRE (emphasis mine)." p. 319

In the first place, I was always under the impression that the Shanahmeh had nothing to do with the Jews but refered to Persian history...but let that go. When David "shook off the yoke of Philistine tyranny" and "achieved the glory of empire", did he do it with bubble-gum, or did he too kill people? David is a completely unsavory character who committed every crime known to civilization. And this puny empire of theirs, did it not entail the imposing of "yokes" and "tyranny" on others? How else do you get an empire...even one as dismal and short-lived as the "glorious" one of David (which barely lasted till his son´s death and involved two pretty pathetic "conquests"?

The Assyrians are villified for their success...because they did not have the luxury of being protected by natural barriers, as were the Egyptians, but rather exposed to attack from every side, they naturally had to develop far more effective means of defense...and defense often entails better offenive measures than your enemies can spring on you...there was nothing inherrently evil in the Assyrian character or empire, quite the contrary...many of the arts of modern civilization come to us thanks to the genius and efforts of the ancient Assyrians....to vilify them for protecting and nourishing those arts, in the face of the constant menace they faced from jealous and desperate groups seems ungrateful to say the least.

The wheel has been far more beneficial to humans than the bible ever was.
