When I think I’m done mining the depths of this one chapter, something I’ve read ten times jumps out at me as if for the first.

As you read this remember how often our “nationalists” slip up and speak of Issaiah and his promise and other “good” things the Bible has to say about the ancient Assyrians.

“To the Jews and the Western Christians of the nineteenth century, the most important thing about the newly-discovered tablets and monuments was that they had proven the Hebrew Bible to be right.”

Where our nationalists were concerned, this was the be-all and end-all of their determination to re-name themselves “Assyrians”…for in what better way could this sect of “heretics” take the credit as the people, whose recently discovered treasures, had taken the Christian world by storm…whose newly minted and adopted “ancestors”, “had proven the Hebrew Bible right”?

This was heady stuff to those living in obscurity, cut off from the centers of power and industrial culture and wealth. The entire Christian population on earth had THEM to thank for proving “God’s Word” to have been the truth. What villager, living in a mud-brick house , tending his ten sheep and eating his dolma, could fail to have his blood boil over and his brain turn to mush at his instant fame? And then, as today, if “fame” is present, may not some fortune follow close behind? After the limelight had been turned on the fields and grazing pastures of the north of Iraq, who would tolerate any “stupid professor sitting in Ivy”, to threaten this unheard of gift or take it away from them…who would dare even question, or allow others to, such an exalted pedigree which earned the world’s interest and respect overnight and led “directly” and “lineally” to his mud hut?

Who?

Those monuments and tablets, a half million of them still locked away in vaults, have never held any interest whatsoever to the vast majority of modern Assyrians…yet a few sentences of the Hebrew bible are poured over for centuries to extract hidden promises to the modern Assyrians….while millions of words, in the handwriting of and written or collected by their “ancestors”…as verses the words written in the bible by others than those who uttered them and much later…have held interest only for Jews and a few more...but hardly five modern Assyrians. Is this pride in their “heritage” or in how this heritage has served the Jews and Christianity?

Are you “proud” of yourself when people use you, only begging them to please to pay you?
