Here’s what you were if you were born Spanish 700 years ago; a mixture of Celts, Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Visigoths, Vandals, Arabs, Berbers, and Jews...and each one of those was itself made up of who knows how many other people and cultures...and that was 700 years ago....since then Spaniards have mixed with even more “others”.

So, what’s a “pure” Spaniard? What’s an Assyrian?

It’s one thing for us to self-identify as children of Ashurbanipal...it’s our little private crazy and no one else cares. But if we think to lay claim to special rights or lands because we identify ourselves as Assyrians...we’ve got an everlasting surprise coming our way. Before people give us anything they’re naturally going to want to know if we can prove title...and we can’t. Not in any way meaningful to the people asking for proof...and they’re the ones who have what we want to get.

If I show up at Aprim’s door with a feather in my hair, war paint and moccasins and ask for my “indigenous” tribal lands back, the part that his house is sitting on, I doubt he’s going to give it to me. Not even if I really was an Apache would he do it. But, just because I say so...and point to my feather?
