THE ASSYRIAN MUSLIM wrote:

" It is a well known fact that our ancestors began calling themselves "Assyrians" after ww1. It is widely agreed that it was the English men who named the Nestorians as "Assyrians". This is admitted by the Anglicans and the Catholic encylopedia as well. Furthermore, most historians and scholars do not always believe today's Christians of Iraq to be the actual Assyrians of antiquity. However, we are Assyrian now and that is the issue. The Nestorians who became Roman Catholic were given the name "Chaldean" in the 17th century ce. The remaining Nestorians were later named "Assyrians" by the British. So, whether today's Assyrians are truly descendants of the ancient Assyrians or not is not really that important to me, but what is strange here and important is the fact that the ancient Assyrians pretty much disappeared from history after their fall and were silenced from future history.

It is said that Assyrians converted to Christianity in the 3rd and 4th centuries ce. If that is the case, that means that Assyrians began losing their identity and for almost 1,700 years they did not know, care, or do anything dealing with"Assyrianism". They were known as "Suraye" (Christian name) and not Ashuraye or Assyrians. They used names like Dinkha, Shlemon, Hurmiz instead of Ashur, Sargon and Sencharib. Everything in the last 1,700 years is a Suraye thing rather than Assyrian thing, There is no real evidence or any Assyrian accomplishments, but it is rather always related to church and Christian Suraye traditions. Now, I have no problem with those Assyrians who are devout Christians or whatever else some may follow, but I am curious to know something.

Since we appearntly did not know that we were the great "Ashuraye" and simply called ourselves "suraye" and it was the British who gave us the Assyrian name in order to serve their political interests, would the so called fighters for modern "Assyrianism" be calling themselves Assyrian today? I am serious about this. I don't think they would be calling themselves Assyrians just as the Catholics would not be calling themselves Chaldeans. So, what would they be caling themselves had it not been for the British? perhabs Nestorians, Syriacs, Arameans or maybe just Christian Iraqis. Who knows what they would be referring to themselves and who knows were Sargon Dadeesho, Fred Aprim and the rest would be.

Whatever the case would, be I personally don't think they be calling themselves Assyrians and it would propably just be a Christian thing which in fact it always has been from the start. Peace

I advise you NOT to be curious but knowledgeable that :

>> The Britons if they gave us the name ASSYRIAN , it was done because we were Assyrians , why they didn't say that we are ' Turks, Kurds, Arabs , Armenians or Arabs.

>> It was a fact that people over a hundred years ago were known by their religious affiliation and the NATIONALISM was not known yet, so they were all SURAYE / CHRISTIANS .

>> You are DEAD wrong the Assyrians were proud of their ancient heritage as ASSYRIANS to a point they called ASSYRIA , a place of learning ' Athur Mab'ath youlpana ' and many Assyrians a case in point Malpana Gewarges of Erbil in his verses which exceeds l00 lines there are 5 lines how proudly mention the Assyrian and Assyrianism( I will post those lines following this message ) and this MALPANA/EDUCATOR who live by the A.D. 1225 that the British didn't sat a foot in the Middle East which refute your claim a hundred percent.

>> The Assyrians after being Christians , YES were influenced by Christianity and used more often the BIBLICAL NAMES as the MUSLIMS in Afghanistan, Iran , Turkey and Pakistan are using ARABIC NAMES , but that DOESN'T make them ARABS, the same with us, BUT , you are not aware because there are still hundreds of names that could be traced to our Assyrian people a case in point , Beto, Khammo, Nimo , Dammo , Tammo , Shamiram and others , keep in mind in order to be ASSYRIANS doesn't mean to have ASSYRIAN king list names .

In conclusion, they called themselves ' SURAYEE , ASURAYE and today they call themselves Iraqi Assyrians .
