"Nestorians also betrayed the Qurds to Turkish officials...they revealed plans the Qurds were making to fight the Ottomaans in their own districts...Simko asked Marshimun to join in the effort and instead Marshimun told the Turks, hoping for favors no doubt...this was the main reason Simko killed him, because of treachery, which is our ONE constant attribute throughout our modern history." -- I never knew this to be the reason for Mar Shimun's murder. As a child I was always told that Simko was a jealous, sneaky man... but no one ever talked about the patriarch's treachery. This reminds me of the 1970 film from Bernardo Bertolucci called "The Spider's Stratagem", about a young Italian who returns to the village where his father was killed by the Fascists. Believing his father to be a anti-Fascist hero, he soon finds out that his old man was actually a Fascist collaborator and traitor, rather than a resistance hero. How embarrassing. --------------------- |
