One of my favorite history courses was, likewise, taught by a professor (a secular Jewish man as well). He told us about how ridiculous it is that people are fighting over an alleged "holy" land that, in the ancient world, was the "Kentucky" of the Middle East.

He also touched on the fact that had it not been for the Roman Empire, Christianity would have never spread as it did...it would have died off just as all of the other silly offshoots of Judaism did.

It was so refreshing for him to be an equal opportunity antidote of crazy beliefs. He was the only professor that emphasized how to consider facts and logically present them in written essays. There are gems here and there in colleges around the country and outside of colleges, but I fear that by-and-large it is more of a wasteland in many colleges and universities.

Thanks for sharing -- you brought back good memories for me. Nostalgia can be good sometimes.

From the '60s, all the way to the present day, he's been acitve and vocal in relation to social issues and foreign policy. He practices law part-time, but his passion is teaching History. He used to tell me that he wouldn't allow students recording his lectures because in the past, agents used to sit in his courses. (And they were always posing as Anarchists.) When the "Iraq War" began, he started to organize his students against the war, which ultimately cost him his history classes (his love). The person involved in screwing him out of his history courses is the Head of the History Department at Los Angeles Valley College... and she just happens to be Assyrian.
