"In the Affluent Society, capitalism comes into its own. The two mainsprings of its dynamic - the escalation of commodity production and productive exploitation - join and permeate all dimensions of private and public existence. The available material and intellectual resources (the potential of liberation) have so much outgrown the established institutions that only systematic increase in waste, destruction, and management keeps the system going. The opposition which escapes suppression by the police, the courts, the representatives of the people, and the people themselves, finds expression in the diffused rebellion among the youth and the intelligentsia, and in the daily struggle of the persecuted minorities. The armed class struggle is waged outside: by the wretched of the earth who fight the affluent monster.

"This society is obscene in producing and indecently exposing a stifling abundance of wares while depriving its victims abroad of the necessities of life; obscene in stuffing itself and its garbage cans while poisoning and burning the scarce foodstuffs in the fields of its aggression; obscene in the words and smiles of its politicians and entertainers; in its prayers, in its ignorance, and in the wisdom of its kept intellectuals.

"Obscenity is a moral concept in the verbal arsenal of the Establishment, which abuses the term by applying it, not to expressions of its own morality but to those of another. Obscene is not a picture of a naked woman who exposes her pubic hair but that of a fully clad general who exposes his medals rewarded in a war of aggression; obscene is not the ritual of the Hippies but the declaration of a high dignitary of the Church that war is necessary for peace."

-- Herbert Marcuse "An Essay on Liberation" 1969

"They train young men to drop fire on people but their commanders won't allow them to write 'fuck' on their airplanes because it's obscene."

-- Brando as 'Kurtz' in "Apocalypse Now" 1979

... this is purely obscene. I saw this a while back yet I'm not sure if it was the same judges, I only remember the kids being interviewed and how they revealed that they were never told when they would be released - as the days and months of their young sweet lives slipped by. There are so many innocent people in these private prisons. A large number of them are African-Americans slapped down with felonies for petty drug charges. I explained this to the young kids in my Black Studies class back in '99, that they are the primary targets to fill these modern gulags. And once they're in the system, its' a revolving door. Once they get a felony on their records, they're not able to find proper employment, but most importantly, they are barred from voting. This whole system is obscene.
