After the Church Committee's revelation of the dirty tricks that the CIA had played in it's 30-year history, there was some positive hope that under Carter, the Democrats were going to start with a clean slate, and assign the CIA to do what it's supposed function was: intelligence gathering and not being the secret army of the president.

But nothing changed for the better, it actually even got worse, considering that the Angola War was being waged by the CIA which was arming UNITA against the MPLA, which by the way, was backed and trained by Cubans and Soviets.

The whistleblower, John Stockwell, was the CIA station chief who was assisting UNITA during Angola's civil war, and he later admitted that he was supporting the faction whom the average Angolan didn't trust, nor like; especially, since it was a known fact that white mercenaries from Apartheid South Africa were also fighting on UNITA's side, to strengthen white South Africa's interests and further its regional hegemony, alongside Mobutu's Zaire, which was also a player on the side of the US.

I think Israel also played a major role in that conflict, and their relations with white South Africa included the possible aiding in A.S.A's nuclear program.

Israel was also a key factor in Reagan's Central American wars, especially in Guatemala, where a genocide of the Maya almost wiped-out all of the Indians.

There was a program on public access in the late '70s throughout the early '90s called Alternative Views. You can watch some of the shows on YouTube in which John Stockwell, and also, Phillip Agee (also a whisle blower and a Cuban activist) talk about that period, about the CIA, Israel and Apartheid South Africa's role in the wars of Africa and Central America.

The Church Committee hearings took place in 1976, and this is the Church Committee's Reports if you're interested:
