I remember stories told to me by my grandmother and her younger brother Babajan Malik about the time the Russian armies marched into Urmia during WW I. Babajan was then 18 years old and already a leader among the assyrians. He loved military tactics and he and his friends had formed a military guard and used to drill daily, under the approving gaze of the Russians, with rifles they had carved from wood.

When the Russian army was recalled, either to join battle or because of the Revolution, one of the officers who had befriended Babajan gave the assyrian boys some obsolete rifles, and then left. The Muslim neighbors had not been pleased to see this friendship between the occupying Russian Christians and their own local Christians strutting about carrying, now, Russian rifles....later Babajan became the personal bodyguard and head of the guards to Agha Poutrous....he went on to fight by his side in all the battles they engaged in against the Turks and FOR the British...even to the point of executing, in cold blood, several people sworn to murder Poutrous...for which years later, as he lay dying in a nursing home where I visited him in Turlock, he would wipe tears away from his eyes with his thick hard-working hands and say, "May god forgive me for what I have done"...when we replied that it was wartime and these things happen, he would only mutter, "may god forgive me, may god forgive me." At the end of the War Babajan and his young family were taken to Paris, France, along with Poutrous, where he continued as his personal bodyguard until Poutrous's death when he moved his family to America.

We have a sad history of betraying our neighbors in favor of those who use us and will somehow "save" us...and after each betrayal we have indeed needed saving..but not because of what we are i.e., Christians or, more absurdly "assyrians", but because of what we have DONE in betraying our neighbors and countries in favor of an occupying Christian force...and we have steadily refused to accept any responsibility for these acts of sedition and treason...blaming everything we suffered on the "hatred" felt for us JUST because we are Christians.

This is the reason it is so vital to expose these lies and give equal responsibility for the mess we've made to ourselves...because we keep making this same mistake...and it is costing those few Christians left in Iraq any chance of living there in peace and prosperity....these actions of ours have been literally killing us, for a few centuries...and it has to stop. We have to tell the truth or else every last Iraqi Christian will be killed or driven out...as these coalition Christian forces have almost succeeded in doing.

assyrian nationalists are USING the Christians back home as an excuse and means of gaining more western "sympathy", actually; pity...and that won't work for them if those Iraqi Christians are shown to be thriving, or protected or even left alive, by the Muslims, no, they MUST be "persecuted" for the greater good of an "assyria" that the foreign Christians will "surely" create for us when they see HOW WE SUFFER FOR BEING CHRISTIANS!...to our nationalists there is only ONE function those "dear brothers and sisters" of theirs can serve and that is to SUFFER under " traditional Muslim hatred"...and indeed, if those Christians won;t allow themselves to be used for "the national cause" by getting themselves killed "for assyria", then they had better die anyway...for their continued existence, especially if has any marks of justice or success to it, gives the lie to Aprim and the rest...so, either they get killed for the RIGHT cause, or they just get killed...but they are there to be USED!
