This is a fact about them. If they knew all along who they were, why didn't they tell the Italians they can fuck themselves along with their converts with this new name because "we're better than them, we're Assyrians". It was only after the Chaldean identity was well in use for at least full two centuries and then came the discovery of Assyrian artifacts, and the remaining Nestorians adopted that name. We have said this thousands of times and our hairs have probably turned white since but it's worth repeating because this topic doesn't go away. These are Christians of various denominations, who speak various dialect of a particular language and they have each adopted an ethnic name for its denomination. It's impossible for every Nestorian to be purely Assyrian, just as it's impossible for every Chaldeean to be an exact descendant of Chaldeans of antiquity and same goes for Arameans. There was and always has been way too much mixing for this to happen.

And then it gets even worst. You have the smallest of the group(Assyrians) claiming that the members of the other denominations are wrong and are Assyrian also. This is even more absurd. There are people who have Assyrian blood, Chaldeean, Aramean, Akkadian, Sumerian and whatever else. Nobody can be pure this or that. Nobody is a direct descendant of anyone. How can they know that not a single sperm drop from an Arab or some other group could have got into them somewhere down the line? I mean before they became Christians and racist nationalists, the ancients mixed with whoever and there was no reason not to. Assyrians had an empire and anyone who lived in Assyria was a citizen, but that's doesn't make them all ethnic Assyrians. I was once told that Arameans were always Assyrians, but then why were they conquered and incorporated into the empire if they were already Assyrians?

There is way too much to this and it's much more complex than what they make it out to be. When they say they always knew who they were and that by calling themselves "suraye" they knew what they meant, they're clearly being dishonest or are misinformed. Unfortunately, a people with a certain goal will do anything and find anything to justify their beliefs. You can show all of the errors and contradictions in religious books, but the followers will still say all books have errors except their own. No religious can ever prove his beliefs to be correct, but he still convinces himself and tries to get others to do it as well. There will be people like this always and will never change, but then there are others who are sincere even when nationalistic(as I was) who will eventually get a hold on right information and stop this garbage. Of course Islam helped me with breaking away from nationalism and eventually I never found it interesting again. I could have been born a Pakistani and so could Aprim and then what would happen? We be speaking Urdu and become Pakistani nationalists or we can just be humans, happy and get along. In my time with both Muslims and Christians, I have found the latter to be more racist and hateful. I have found Christians from Middle East to be more backward, racist and full of hate against Muslims and even themselves. Everything I ever heard about Muslims is what I really saw from Assyrians and not the other way around. I still can't insult Christians in front of Muslims without them idiots taking their sides or defending them. Christians for the most part would never do that. Apart from the likes of Hedges, who is not Assyrian, you will hardly ever see an Assyrian defending Muslims or telling the truth about how they really lived together for over thousand years.

Sure we fought at times but we also lived together peacefully at other times and for most of our times. There were instanced under cetain Caliphs were Christians had it a little tougher but there were other times were they didn't and for the most part they had it good. There were even marriages between Nestorians and Muslims few centuries ago and this means it only became a taboo after nationalism.
