I absolutely loather "Sophie's Choice" and only finished it under protest...I don;t want that experience turned into art for me....nothing, absolutely nothing is more poignant than the stark reality of it...and, I still have an imagination...Christians who could do that, could do ANYTHING." -- Exactly. There are three narrative films I saw about the Holocaust: One was Lina Wertmuller's "Seven Beauties"; the other was Liliana Caviani's "The Night Porter", about a camp survivor who years after WW2 runs into a camp guard (played by Dirk Bogarde) with whom she resumes the sadomasochistic relationship they had begun during the war in the camp; and of course, I saw Polanski's "The Pianist". Other than those three, I refuse to see any narrative or fictional portrayal of the Holocaust. I've seen numerous documentaries, the one that really sticks out is the 9 1/2 hour film "Shoah" by Claude Lanzmann. To make a fictional portrayal of something so horrid and monstrous is to minimize the suffering of those who perished and the rest who survived. Jerry Seinfeld did a funny episode where he takes a girl on a date to see "Schindler's List" and his parent's friends see him in the theater making out during the film. I find it deplorable when I hear people deny that there was a Holocaust. The Germans themselves kept strict records of every single thing they did to Jews, the Roma, communists, homosexuals, the disabled, and the rest of the 11 million victims who died, that it's insane to say that it didn't happen. --------------------- |
