The thing about Spielberg is that a few months back he was saying that Hollywood is going to implode because the budgets for the films are so huge these days. The truth of the matter is Spielberg and Lucas destroyed a golden period in Hollywood which started in 1967 with Arthur Penn's "Bonnie and Clyde" and pretty much ended in 1980 with Martin Scorsese' "Raging Bull". Not to put the blame strictly on them, after all the decade ended with Reagan and Bush occupying the White House, commencing the counter-revolution of the Republicans and the beginning of the War on Terror and massive privatizations. But consider these films, I'll only list one per year, although there are many more, which are by far so much better than any shit that's out on the screens today, or the last thirty years. I already mentioned "Bonnie and Clyde" (1967); "Rosemary's Baby" (1968); "Midnight Cowboy" (1969); "Mash" (1970); "A Clockwork Orange" ('71); "The Godfather" ('72); "Serpico" ('73); The Godfather part II ('74); "Dog Day Afternoon" ('75); "Taxi Driver" ('76); "Annie Hall" ('77); "Coming Home" ('78); "Apocalypse Now" ('79); "Raging Bull" ('80)... Are there any films these days that match this list? No. Thanks to Spielberg and Lucas (and Reagan and Bush) films with substance are rare. For each consecutive year, I can list a number of others,... but you know what I mean. I boycott these two filmmakers' films, except I did watch "Munich" and it wasn't a bad film. But each of the films I listed have something to say. That's what films are supposed to do, in my opinion.
