Malik Yaqu was a close friend of my late grandfather, Nicola Malik, and his older brother, Nimrud's - Phillip Jr's grandpa. When I was a kid in San Jose, I'd hang his portrait on my wall while listening to Walter Aziz' "Atur B't Khaya": "Med-ye-le dana qhatan ke derakh/A atran kheel-ye men dezh-menan shaq-lakh/Men-kha lib'ha bal-shakh/Ghu m'ditet Nineveh/Byqhadan mar-makh/At-ya dana Atur b't khaya/Atur b't khaya/" I was a passionate teen drinking araq with my cousins in San Jose, talking zealously about Agha Petrous and the two Mar Shimuns - and hating all MUSLIMS!. I used to compare the assassination of Mar Benyamin Shimun to the cinematic murder of Emiliano Zapata as portrayed by Marlon Brando in the climax of the Elia Kazan film, "Viva Zapata!" I also remember being told that Yaqu's son, David Malik Ismael, was an "honorable" man by some folks... after all, he was protecting his father's honor when he pulled the trigger after Mar Eshai Shimun called him "brunet'kalba".. What nonesense!!!
