When I was a kid in Tehran, our neighbors next door, with whom we shared a common balcony, were Jewish, and downstairs, Muslim. Like most kids, we all played, shared toys and got along. One day, two stray dogs appeared in our neighborhood, and my brother and I, who were prisoners in our apartment because "Muslims would rape us and slit our throats", could only briefly step out into the street (under my mother's supervision) and play with the two dogs. I loved these dogs... my mom, coming from a Muslim family, wouldn't allow us to have a dog in our home, so these two dogs, in a sense, became our pets. One dreadful day, I heard some people yelling outside and when I leaned out our second-story window, I saw a man with a rifle shoot my dogs with tranquilizers, scrape them off the pavement and threw them in a car - also in the street, I saw my Jewish friend/neighbor, Kamran, standing there with his parents. I'm still troubled with the memory of seeing my dogs treated that way, having no say in the outcome, I was looking for someone to blame. The rumour traveled that Kamran's mother had called the authorities to rid the neighborhood of the dogs because Kamran was afraid of the animals. When this news reached our apartment, my grandmother said, "They (the Jews) killed our Christ, you think they have any mercy for dogs?" I was full of hate, I couldn't believe that my freind, knowing how much I loved those dogs, would do something like that. So, I went out in our common balcony and took all the charcoal I could find and threw it in our Jewish neighbor's side. To be fair in my hatred, I dumped a good amount of charcoal downstairs in our Muslim neighbor's yard, since I never forgave them for daring to call our Jesus "only a prophet and not a god", some weeks or months before the dog incident. I adimit it was a disgraceful thing to do and I'm still ashamed for what I did as a seven-year old kid. But what I find more disgraceful now is my family's reaction (except for my mom who went to both neighbors with endless apologies helping to clean my vandalism). Even though I acted as I did, my neighbors (and their parents) never once mentioned the incident and never stopped loving my family and I.
