Among the Jewish Left I've heard both versions regarding the Rosenbergs. In 1953 a large segment of leftist Jews were Stalinists and belonged to the Communist Party USA, but after Khruschev's secret speech in 1956, they became disillusioned with the CPUSA and the USSR. Among the die-hard communists there were individuals who did leak information to the Russians, especially among some of the people who worked at Los Alamos because they thought it was only fair that the Russians should have a bomb to equalize the power game between East and West. This was known to army intelligence, CIA and the FBI. So it's possible that like Sacco and Vanzetti, they picked out the Rosenbergs and made an example of them. I know that Leslie Groves was even suspicious of Robert Oppenheimer who was a socialist, and Groves did not trust him, nor did he trust or like the other Jewish scientists working on the bomb. Like you, I think the Rosenbergs were scapegoated, especially Ethyl, and it does surprise me that Norman thinks the opposite.

During New Year's 2001, I was invited to an outdoor gathering under the stars in the mountains of Ojai. I arrived with two girls, a sack of weed, and was received with a friendly cup of magic mushroom tea from my musician friend who had given me the secret directions. As the mushrooms kicked in an hour or so later, time turned into timelessness, and the crowd of people around me began to groove around a bonfire, dancing to electronic music, which I don't like. The higher I got on the psychedelic mushrooms, the more I distanced myself from the crowd, the music, the gathering... the more I peaked, the more simplistic and clear everything became. My journey began in a state of sober chaos, but my trip became as lucid as water. I found a little hilltop away from the sound of club music, which by then had become an annoying disturbance to my being. I kept asking myself why people bring the dirty dust of the city and contaminate the clean dirt of the earth of the mountains. Once I reached were I was safely away from the sound of the obnoxious music, I began to melt into the trees, the rocks, the landscape... and at once I started to hear the song of the earth, the wind, the crisp rustling of dry winter leaves, like natures instruments playing along with the music of my breath and heartbeat. I felt as if I had finally come to a familiar place to which I had never been. It was one of the most profound experiences I had under the influence of psychedelics. The following day, when I came back to the city, I met up with a good friend of mine and told him about my experience. A few days later, the same friend gave me a book by Krishnamurti called Think On These Things. At the time there were two things I didn't know about: who Krishnamurti was, and that the place I had had my profound trip in the mountains of Ojai, was only minutes away from where Krishnamurti had lived until his death in 1986.
