“Other members of the Christians community, usually in the urban centers, were more attracted by the prestige of the ruling religion and tried to imitate it and converted to it.”

This is another dirty secret to our religio/nationalists who claim that we lost numbers because Muslims forcibly converted us or massacred us when the simple reality is, like Christianity before it, Islam attracted converts for many reasons…among them being the desire to get ahead in life by joining the ruling class.

“Generally speaking, the Christians do not seem to have felt the humiliation and discomfort of their status, especially when the vast majority of their Muslim compatriots themselves did not seem to fare any better even in this world”

As Dr Joseph points out elsewhere that the common denominator in the suffering and disadvantages of all subjects, Muslim and Christian, was due to the rigors and demands of feudalism…which was as severe for the Christian subject as it was for the Muslim…and was no easier to bear for the Christian living under his Christian lord or bishop.

If Christians in Muslim lands were technically subject to greater abuse as members of a religious minority… still, they did not have to serve in wars but could remain behind to work their fields, care for their families and prosper while the Muslim had to abandon family and farm…and, most important to them of all, they were not disturbed in their “heretical” views but were left in peace to worship their Messiah as they saw fit..founding schools, building churches and producing a literate culture that would have been impossible under Christian rule. Surely these must have been great advantages when one considers the wars and religious persecution they would have faced in orthodox Christian lands.
