I just learned about "Operation Gladio" a few weeks ago when I was watching and reading about the 70's ultra-Leftist movements. Basically, when I was a kid in mid-70's, I had the image of "Carlos" Illich Ramirez Sanchez photographed in my mind, wondering who this guy was. So, I started doing some half-ass research through films and some reading about the Red Army Faction and Baader Meinhof, until I came across "Galdio", which began as a project funded by the CIA after the War to make sure that the Communist Party didn't gain much power in Italy. It gained momentum and spread throughout Europe during the Cold War up until the 80s. It was something like COINTELPRO but bloodier... more violent and vicious. They were bankrolling extreme Right Wing gangs and Fascsit militias, using them to deliberately target women and children in bombings supposed to have been made to seem as if it was the work of the Leftist groups in the various European countries. Finally in the 80s, some Italian diplomats, I think, came out and started exposing it to the public. Some of them did some minor time, but, like Tonkin, 9/11, Lusitania, it was used as a means to an end... and that being the "containment" of communism and the destruction of the Left. Look at Europe and Russia now.. 80,000 skinhead Nazis in Moscow terrorizing Central Asians just this last week in Moscow.
