...it all makes sense....I think my example doesn't apply here after all....but, we do seem to be getting closer and closer to a police state, while maybe Russia isn't getting far away from one fast enough.

...you can see why Castro had to eliminate "democracy"....for the same reason Britain voided elections during their wars....a nation in turmoil can be easily infiltrated and infected by outside forces...Castro knew that if he had an "open" society, the way the US said he should, all sorts of "grass-roots" Cuban "freedom" societies and parties would have emerged and all of them funded by the CIA...if the US would leave other people alone, they could afford to open up their societies to "democracy" with confidence...but the US has been in a perpetual state of economic war against Cuba, and at times military as well...under those conditions no Cuban president could have afforded an "open society"...it was the US that closed down democracy in Cuba, not Castro.
