The answer is simple: it's all about money and power. After the war ended and the U.S. came out of it "unscathed", in a matter of a few years the U.S. economy started to lose its steam. So the War Dept, the Wall St. bankers and Truman feared that yet another decades-long depression was on the horizon. So they decided that a war economy would save the nation from falling back into the years of of the Great Depression. By the time IKE Eisenhower became president, with John Foster Dulles as Secretary of State, and his brother, Allen Dulles, as Director of the CIA---both brothers Wall St. lawyers---the Military Industrial Complex (MIC) came into being. The justification for the MIC was what Plato called the "Noble Lie": American Exceptionalism vs Communist World Domination. Now that we know that all of that was bullshit, we came up with yet another noble lie: Global War on Terrorism (GWOT) vs Islamic Jihadist World Supremacy. The epoch of ideology is over; we are now in the era of "self-interest", in other words: money, money, money, money... and power, or as "Scarface" Tony Montana says, "In this country, first you get the money, then you get the power, then you get the woman... or as "Lucky" Luciano said, "There's no such thing as good money or bad money. There's just money." And as the epitome of gangsterism, we tend to follow the philosophy of "Sarface" and "Lucky". But how long will we remain lucky?
