...Shlomo Sand. Verso, 2009. The New York Times; "Extravagantly denounced and praised". That's the book for me.

Still reading it...many interesting things which relate to our own "invention". You can imagine the kind of shit this man has gotten...but, as there are real Israeli scholars as well, no Aprims there, many have praised his work.

Basically he says that it is a myth, a useful one politically, that Jews were ever driven out en masse from the Holy Land. Some were always leaving but at no time was there a mass exodus like people believe. This myth, that all Jews everywhere originated in Judea and were driven out only to finally return after years in "exile" served the politicians and those who created Israel as a justification for driving out the Arabs...I guess the idea is that I can throw you out of your house so long as I believe that 5000 years ago you threw me out of it...I am merely "coming back home".

The Zionists especially needed this myth to justify what they planned...

But, it ain't true. Before the Romans turned Christian, and even bloodier, Jews had indeed been proseltizing...and many pagans and others, all the way to Bulgaria and the Crimea, converted to Judaism...this all stopped when the Romans put an end to it...but, the Jewish communities in Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Russia etc. were not descended from the Jews of Judea...they were native to those lands.

While this was admitted by scholars before the making of Israel, it soon stopped being talked of because it went against the basis of Zionist claims that Jews were kicked out of and scattered from the Holy Land and had a "right" to return.

...of course, there is another group intent on inventing a past for itself that will give it some semblance of a "right to return"...guess which.
