Gaby Kiwaris, before they locked me out of Mesopotatoes, thought to praise me by saying I should be a columnist. I’m assuming it was a compliment because you need to have something to say day after day without fail and formulate it quickly if you’re going to be any good at all…also you have to not repeat too often…be somewhat original etc.

I say it was left-handed praise because to be a serious columnist one has to dedicate the time, which means it has to be a paid profession and not a hobby. Since Assyrians are loathe to pay for more than what is absolutely necessary, like toothpaste and grossly expensive cars, her meaning was that I should take what talents, even she was forced to recognize, and go someplace else…anyplace but Assyria.

This is our way with those whose talents and dedication we grudgingly are forced to admit, especially if they show signs of being able to translate this talent into work, outside, but for the community too. Rather than embracing them and smoothing their path for them so that they WON’T go away, we take all our talented people, frustrate them, so long as they stubbornly insist on remaining within the community, and then watch them in relief when they finally despair and leave to go work for others, with the inner satisfaction that comes of knowing our position as the “real” Assyrians is made secure…no matter how many ill-equipped and clownish Assyrians remain…they are the true ones…the ones this nation of klutzes is “depending” on to get them a country, in the face and teeth too of the Kurds etc…whom the ones they count on for getting their Assyrian “pride” back for them.

Witness the fact that the same fools who five years ago refused to read or think or discuss any options because they had “important work to do for this nation”…are now, with the end result of Kurdistan staring them in the face as the result of that famous "work" they all insist the other guy is doing, breathlessly saying, all over again, that they have even less time to read or think or discuss options because they have even more urgent and, “important work to do for this nation”.

Who can resist the temptation of thinking that this wholesale destruction of the community spirit and scrambling of our brains is exactly what their “important work for this nation” amounts to…that is; a nation, even in the archaic and tribal sense, under Jesus Christ Superstar, dedicated to validating the bible…which can only be achieved if Issaiah hands them Assyria on a platter…for to get it ourselves or in any other way, though it gave us Assyria and our pride back…would not serve their purpose which is to prove the veracity of yahwe…and not Ashur…who said we should get back Assyria when we deserved it and earned it through our own efforts, as the Kurds just got it, and not a moment before.

If I wrote like most of our scholars and journalists, like Fred Aprim for instance or our dearly departed and much befuddled Ivan Kakovitch, I would be hailed a hero and welcomed with open arms…like, for instance:”I being proud being Assyrians becaz we de greatest ever and don’t let no you buddy say no…and Kurds dey bad and so is all else Turks an Arabs, Yuck and Phtooey too! who say now to we weing.”

You’ll notice the words and intellect match rather nicely.

In all honestly Fred Aprim has tried to improve his English and for that he should be commended, although he takes too much satisfaction recently in high-handedly correcting others whose speech is no less barbarous than his was… except his ideas have remained the same so the whole was an exercise in futility since we understand even better what foolishness he was saying all along.

We also have this thing about not bragging…remaining humble etc., as a way of muzzling those who have some legitimate achievement under their belt we don’t want to hear about. The odd thing is that the Boys have no problem bragging about all their losses, weaknesses and “insurmountable” hurdles, with an accurate account, stretching back 1500 years and lovingly updated and maintained, of how many times they’ve had the shit kicked out of them…since turning Christian… for this too, when engaged in exclusively and pedantically manifests a sort of pride…a twisted one, which is all they’ve made of Assyrian pride…one which never tires of its defeats and lists of martyrs and massacres but has little interest in countering its set-backs with anything approaching real success.

Even though everything they point to was done TO them and not BY them…they manage to find in this sort of passive mutilation a satisfaction that they are “innocent” and free from the potential errors and disasters that come when you DO something…and that it’s far better for them to fail while doing nothing than to try and possibly fail anyway, which maligns their capability and calls into question their ability to succeed at anything important, while the other way can be pointed to with “pride”, Christian pride, as proof of sanctimonious blessedness and repugnance at engaging in things of this world…Our Boys never heard that it is better to try and fail than never to have tried at all….their reading of this is that it is far better to fail while making no effort (save the sillies they call “lotta wurkk”) but try to fail gloriously…so you at least have some consolation as an outstanding failure.

As boys, in age, these fellows would have run home crying, “Mommy, Mommy…I got an “F”…and I was the ONLY ONE!”

And his mother would………..?
