"Keeper of the Flame" and "Meet John Doe", two movies from the 40s when America was fighting Fascism could never be made today. It's surprising they were ever made. Both of them deal with the issue of super-patriotism masking Fascism, but in the United States, not Germany or Ital or Spain...both involve a famous "defender of American democracy" who is found to be a Fascist at heart, building a movement within the country with a patriotic American front that really hides a Fascistic attempt to take over the government. Which brings us to the "Patriot Act", the kind of Fascistic overuse of the word "patriot" those films were warning about.

In the next decade we're going to see the apex of the Fascism/Patriot movement in the United States...it's coming to a head not so much because of wars but because of wages. The challenge for modern Fascists, not the Chaplin version, is to fool people into voting against their own self and best interests by presenting the interests of the wealthy as really their own interests as well. This wouldn't be necessary in a monarchy or dictatorship because people don't have a vote to be tricked out of them...you just make the laws the tyrant wants for himself, family and friends...which is exactly what we have going on as well, but this is a nominal democracy, so the wealthy are forced to spend money to trick people.

The early-model Fascist governments did away with voting rights, if there ever were any...as sophisticated as Goebbels was, for his time, his clownish propaganda could not be counted upon today....fast forward to today when marketing research, psychology AND child psychology have all had time and funds to develop and Goebbels has been bested, by a lot. We've almost perfected the Fascist Dream, which is to EFFORTLESSLY lead people into voting against themselves...now, people WANT to kick the legs out from under themselves, they WANT to have more hunger and disease and poorly-paying jobs with no future, they YEARN for no retirement, no vacations...they are BEGGING for austerity to begin...at least they think they do...and putting those ideas in their heads is really want Fascism is all about....it isn't about jackboots, and goosesteps and raised arm salutes, not even about funny mustachios....those were the early models, the Model T of Fascism...today we've built a Ferrari of Fascism and we love to be driven in it.

At least we have till now...Fascism must ultimately collapse because the people eventually come to resent their suffering needlessly...especially when they reflect that they COULD change policy to suit themselves and that their interests are galaxies away from those of the wealthy. If the greedy wealthy knew when to stop, they might be able to last a lot longer...but they can't stop...for at their level money-grubbing has become a disease...they can't control themselves, they can't limit themselves...even though they have more money than they can spend or need, they still want another dollar more and sooner or later they go too far...we seem to be just approaching that point now.

Some indication of real rebellion, the kind that will work today and not the violent kind, came when a bunch of students at a college in California decided to set up a petition drive...to get enough signatures on the ballot to place there a measure raising the minimum wage to $10.00 an hour...still not enough to live a decent life on, but considerably more than it was....well of COURSE they had no trouble getting people to sign...and the measure passed, easily, when it came time to vote....DUH!

This is rebellion democracy-style. This is what the Founders envisioned when they opted for democracy in the first place...for a way to give people the peaceful option to change the direction of government WITHOUT revolution and blood and property damage, which had been the history of European governments, and soon would be in the greatest rebellion to date, the French Revolution. People WILL change their form of government when it gets too out of line...no matter how poor, hungry and weak, they WILL rise up eventually...they always have. The trick was to create a form of government whereby they could do it peacefully, by simply voting in the changes they thought best, for them...as the wealthy do all they can for their own, narrow, self-interest.

That's exactly what those students did...and, I think, it's going to happen more often...the only thing that can slow it down is another FDR who realized he'd better curtail the wealthy or else a REAL rebellion might break out...but, if the People can just remember that they can get whatever they want through the ballot...Fascism will die.

Right now, it's the strongest it's ever been.
