Whites complain that Kapernick is unpatriotic while Blacks and Latinos cheer Kaepernick for taking a public stand against state violence.

On social media, sports broadcasts, and public demonstrations, the U.S. exploded this weekend following Colin Kaepernick's refusal Friday to stand for the country's national anthem before a National Football League pre-season game, with whites, predictably excoriating the San Francisco quarterback's protest against a spate of widely-publicized police killings of Blacks and Latinos, while people of color–perhaps just as predictably– applauded the gesture.

"I will be STANDING during the National Anthem tonight," New York Giants offensive lineman Justin Pugh, who is white, wroite on Twitter Saturday. "Thank you to ALL (Gender,Race,Religion) that put your lives on the line for that."

This guy is a joke," fomer Major League Baseball player Aubrey Huff tweeted Saturday. "Get lost. You don't like it in a country that has given you opportunity to succeed? Then get out."

But Gloria La Riva, the Socialist Party's candidate for president wrote Saturday: “Kaepernick’s action was a righteous protest against of the epidemic of racism and police brutality in this country. As a socialist and proud, long-time resident of San Francisco, I salute the stand taken by SF 49ers Quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

And Atlanta Falcons Defensive End, Adrian Clayborn, who is Black, wrote this on Twitter: "He can't stand up for his people because he makes millions....so ignorant and narrow minded."

But some people, especially NFL fans, considers the protests as a “lack of patriotism” and have took it to social media to express the anger, with number of tweets showing pictures of Kaepernick's burning jersey.

Wearing a t-shirt with the images of Malcolm X and Fidel Castro, Kaepernick, who identifies as Black, explained to the media after Friday's game that he won’t “stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses Black people and people of color.”

"To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way...There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder,’' he added.

This is not the first time that Kaepernick has expressed his frustration with police killings of unarmed and compliant civilians, typically people of color. He has been active on social media in recent months criticizing the series of high-profile slayings and subsequent exoneration of officers.

In a statement, the NFL said that players are encouraged, but not required to stand during the national anthem. Social media was afire with debates Saturday and Sunday, with whites generally complaining that Kapernick is unpatriotic, and Blacks and Latinos questioning the intellectual engagement of whites who seem either unaware or indifferent to the state terror that has gripped communities of color across the nation.
