Dr Joseph addresses this issue of keeping one's ancient culture and what it takes to do so. He points out that unlike the Assyrians the Persians did not forget their mother tongue....after the Muslim Conquest the Persians adapted Arabic script to their own needs and kept their own language alive. I'd venture to say there isn't a single story or legend from their pre-Islamic past that they've forgotten and certainly nothing since then.

The Assyrians, on the famous other hand, gave up their mother tongue of Akkadian for Aramaic, the language of the Aramaens and, as history shows us, they forgot everything about themselves except what anyone could get from reading the bible. When the ruins were uncovered by Euros there wasn't a single assyrian who could read cuneiform, (there wasn't anyone actually), who knew anything about Gilgamesh, about the Assyrian original to Noah, Napishishtun, the Ennuma Elish or any of a thousand legends and stories and kings NOT mentioned in the Jewish bible.

They had truly forgotten who they were and in this sense, "the Assyrians disappeared"...meaning their conscious KNOWLEDGE of themselves disappeared.

Modern Jews truly "always remembered"...they remembered Noah, even though his story was lifted from the Sumerian Napishistun...they remembered Moses, even though Sargon was the original to that...these are things the modern assyrians forgot about, until the Euros reminded them after the 1840s.....so the case of modern Persians is significantly different than that of modern assyrians.
