bragging rights.....

...while Maggie brags about crucified virgins and Aprim brags about how badly we were supposedly persecuted and Bet-Solomon brags about his indecipherable articles...all of them pushing the envelop of extreme mediocrity and self-pity...I'm going to brag too....only not because I lost anything, or was persecuted or because no one will listen to me...in other words, I'm not bragging about my futility.

..I just learned that the Bancroft Library at the University of California in Berkeley, home to one of the largest, if not largest, collections of Mark Twain papers and documents, a place where scholars come to do research and is world famous....has just accepted my bronze portrait of Mark Twain and will be installing it shortly.

...I know, I know...as an assyrian and one born, in protest, to a Christian family, I should not be bragging about anything that anyone can actually feel PROUD about...you know, an actual achievement....instead I'm to recount how many assyrians were killed by Abu Muslim and how many assyrian virgins I can count, in my sleep, and how I lost Nineveh and got pushed around and won't the world please feel sorry for me and DO SOMETHING about it, because, what can you expect from me, the object of all these calamities.

Well, I know as a kid I was heartened whenever I heard of one us actually contributing something to the world besides tears and half-assed articles...especially if that happened in culture, in the world's culture and not even just our own...so, this is for all those young people in our community who aspire to the Arts but get laughed at or, worse, sent to medical school.....we can do it....YOU can do it.

Of course you'll have to keep a sharp eye out for fellow assyrians because they'll be the first ones to try to kick your teeth out...because if you succeed, it makes them look bad...and they already feel bad enough without YOUR success ruining it for them some more...they have a strong vested interest in keeping us all barefoot and pregnant, and keeping the bar very, very low for what passes for achievement, as an assyrian, in this community....they can only thrive, if you call it that, as long as mediocrity rules this ditzy community.

This is a good place to remind us all that the city of Chicago, with a magnificent collection of public monuments and statuary, including names like Picasso, Brancusi, Meslovich and such, eagerly accepted OUR monument of Shumirum and alloted it a most prestigious location, a block from the Oriental Institute on the campus of the University of Chicago...and everythign was set to go, with the City paying for a pedestal and installation plus a big unveiling with advertisements on busses and such...and it took only ONE assyrian to stop it all...why? because Chicago was supposed to be where HE was the big cheese...how dare I come from California and steal HIS spotlight...so, he threatened to sue the city of Chicago if they installed our monument...which took me 13 years to create at a cost of $200,000 most which I raised MYSELF through the sale of my own sculpture. And today it still sits in storage, because the same organization John Nimrod was president of when he ruined our monument, the AUA, has sent letters threatening the same to anyone else who dares install this monument of Shumirum...and worse, but I won;t mention it yet...not yet, but soon.

How's THAT for assyrian pride!

We'll get a photo up here as soon as they install it...and bravo to Narsai David, my long-suffering patron of 30 years, for making the gift possible.

...it CAN be done...and we CAN do it!
