LETTER TO THE PRESIDENT

Mr President – I have some questions
I hope you will reply,
I’m sure you’re very busy
But at least I hope you’ll try.

I understand your workload
Being President must be tough,
So if you can’t find answers
Then just say – that’s enough!!

Mr President I watched the news today
I watched my country bleed,
So many people with all hope lost
So many mouth’s to feed.

I was wondering if you saw them
With bloodstains on their hands,
I wonder if you thought of them
When you ordered your commands.

Mr President did you see their eyes?
Just staring into space,
The only sign of life in them
Were the tears that stained their face.

Mr President did you look at them?
I watched them for a while,
I saw so many things in them
But couldn’t find a smile.

But why would they be smiling?
Their hearts have turned to stone,
They’re busy digging backyard graves
Their boys are coming home.

Yes their boys are coming home
But not the way they planned,
They’ll come home in a body bag
With a name tag on their hand.

A father was burying his only son
His face was pale and drawn,
Mr President – how proud this father was
The day his son was born.

Mr President – see the babies
Who never stood a chance,
Victims of the sanctions
The U.N took a stance.

What pain and suffering they have endured
What atrocities they have seen,
Political pawns in a world gone mad
With nothing left – but dreams

Mr President its time for you to go
Just take your troops and leave,
Leave these people with some pride
And give them time to grieve.

Let them grieve for the sons they’ve lost
For the fathers who disappeared,
For the children who’ll grow up orphans
In a world they’ve learnt to fear.

For the mothers who must explain to them
Why daddy’s not coming back,
For the wives who’ll now spend all their years
Mr President - dressed in black.

Mr President did you stop and think
I may have crossed the line?,
Mr President did you stop and think
The biggest crime is mine?

You got the man you wanted
Saddam will rule no more,
Mr President – you said democracy
But now we’re not so sure.

Democracy means freedom
To live life as you please,
To have the right to stand up and say
“I won’t live on my knees”.

How ironic that you are the President
What a title to behold,
How grand your stature must make you feel
What a position to uphold.

And I the humble servant girl
No titles to my name,
Who thinks more than you about human rights
Mr President – I call that shame.
