...in the film at least the father was a Christian Scientist and rather conservative...he berates his daughter-in-law for their hippy ways, lack of respect for authority etc. In "House of Spirits", by Isabel Allende, the main character is also a Right Wing fascist-type who extolls law and order but finds his daughter arrested and molested by the military he always championed...the lesson for parents, especially those who forget their youth and the ways of youth, is that the military and police causes they champion, especially in their grumpy old age, might one day turn on their own children and grandchildren...which is what is going to come home to roost in America, with a vengeance.
