I received this letter in my e-mail box. I don't know who this Shooma bet-Malik is but this is a great letter.

An Open Letter

Shooma Bet-Malik-(Sam Razali) UK

To:

My Honourable Brother, Special Friend and the

Highly Esteemed Patriarch of Our Beloved Church,

The Church of The East, H.H. Mar Dinkha IV

I have taken the courage of writing to you, and writing it as An Open Letter, and I do it somehow with humility and somewhat with a sort of apprehensiveness as to how should I begin this letter (which will be read by a large number of people) let alone how could I pen the things that I want to say.

Your Holiness, though distant relations we have been close family friends. For me the recollection that stands out among such memories is when, in Tehran, you would come to us. Yes indeed your visit was a special occasion for us. My parents were alive and everything was live and lovely. As I entered home my mother in a loud voice would say 'Shooma Kassee betayeleh keslan'. You were a Handsome Young Man who was a Qasha, and then became an Aboona. Whether we were having our lunch or afternoon tea (I can clearly visualize our beautiful Semavaar!) the time was spent in good conversation and enhanced by your wit and wisdom and also at times it was interrupted by some unexpected interjection. I still recall the sound of your laughter when I would crack a facetious, or perhaps silly, joke. As I am writing these lines I can vividly see the smiling faces of my beloved parents and my sisters and brothers and everyone else that was with us. Such occasions were joyous ----- and absolute fun. Here I better stop, and stop indulging in such recollections as I feel my eyes are getting misty. These are not some namby-pamby sentiments but 'real feelings' emerging from 'real hearts'. In fact I am not particularly a nostalgic person; I always have tried to live for and in 'Here and Now'. But those days were truly good days. In the past a year or so, for example, I have spoken on one or two occasions to your sister on the phone. She too, whenever we began reminiscing those days, kept saying "Oh those were the days!". Days that we sadly cannot have them back.

I want to speak about the subject matter of 'Assyrians and Assyrianism', which seemingly sounds an easy thing to do, but in truth it isn't. It is more than complex; it is becoming complicated. Who or what have been the elements that have caused such national complexity? My answer to this question is "If not entirely but mostly ourselves" Yes, There is no point to go on blaming other people for the state that we are in today. Let us have a good look 'inside ourselves'. If we do so we find out that our biggest enemies have been from within-----within ourselves. The traitors of the Ashurai and the betrayers of the Umta d'Athorai have been some of the Assyrians themselves. I find it inconceivable. I say this because how can such a 'disease' exist among one of the greatest Peoples and once the greatest Nation on earth==== absolutely inconceivable. They began by splitting our Ancient Church and went on splitting it further and creating more and more divisions and calling them by differnt names and refusing to call themselves Athorai. Sad Sad Sad! How could they deny their identity and betray their heritage is beyond my comprehension! Now these 'spineless creatures' try and do their best to propagate their poisonous messages through the internet, telling the world that there is no such People as Assyrians. Sick propaganda emanating from sick minds. These ignorant, wicked and semi-literate traitors insist on us to believe that 612 BC, which was the fall of Nineveh, also was the end of Assyrians as a People------- 'they all finished' they say. I don't know Why they don't want to go and read about the Great Works of the Assyrians After Assyria? But even if they do they will not accept it.

Your Holiness, as you know well, Assyrians' contributions to the World mostly were accomplished by the determination, courage and dedication of the indefatigable Assyrians who survived the Decline of Nineveh. Yes indeed, the World owes a great deal for its Christianity, Education (particularly for its Universities) and its Civilization as a whole to the Assyrians After Assyria. And all these world-wide contributions came to their fruition under the auspices of the Church of the East and Her responsible Patriarchs. Yes yes, this is true. Those Assyrians who doubt what I have just said let them read the Book Truth Triumphant: The Church in the Wilderness written by an Englishman (American English), Benjamin Wilkinson (sadly no longer with us). These extraordinary people travelled, mostly on foot, from country to country and continent to continent to spread the Gospel of Our Lord and to disseminate culture and education among Peoples of different countries. I want the Assyrians to think of and to see The Church of The East not just as a Church but also as an Institution of Culture and Education. The Church of the East was for centuries a 'Beacon of Enlightenment'.
We Ought To Endeavour To 'Re-make' It A 'Beacon of Enlightenment'.

Your Holiness, We Assyrians need a 'Comprehensive Hisory' of the Assyrians After Assyria, i.e. from 612 BC to 2000 AD. Since in the past three years or so I have written a couple of Articles in reasonable detail on this subject I don't want to repeat the things that I have said already. Anyhow, Such history is more than necessary; it is absolutely essential: let the people of the World know that not only did not Assyrians die out in the fall of Nineveh but many of them survived it and then they went on doing great things in the World. Indeed, let the world know about the tremendous contributions of these people to the Peoples of the World in terms of Christianity, education, culture and so on. I shall be, your Holiness, in touch with you in near future regarding this project and I will put forward my suggestions as to how to go about achieving such goal --------- A Comprehensive History of the Assyrians After Assyria..

Furthermore, I should like to bring to your attention that in the past five years or so I have wriitten more than twenty articles; more than a dozen of them have been on Assyrians and Iraq. The ones on Iraq are chiefly on my strong criticism of the brutal invasion of two Big Powers on a helpless country with its Helpless People. It has been the biggest 'political blunder' in modern history that should never have happened. It was absolutely unjust, and even barbaric, not to mention of course that it was completely illegal. In almost every article I said that the biggest losers in this war (it wasn't war but a a savge invasion) would be the Christians. Was I right or wrong? They tore apart the interstructure of the country; and look at the life of the minorities. Day does not pass by without reading or hearing: a priest was killed, a church was burnt down, an Assyrian boy was abducted, a Chaldean nun was raped , and so on and on.

Your Holiness I am going to gather all the Articles that I have written on Assyrians and Assyrianism and the on the Church of The East and have them published as a Book i.e. as 'Collected Essays'. All the money from sale of rhe book I dedicate to the Assyrians in Iraq----- to be spent on Food, Clothing and Education of the needy children of the Assyrians. I have also dedicated my Book published more than a year ago, Human Dynamic Wholeness to the 'Suffered People of Iraq'. I really and truly believe that everyone of us, as far as feasible for each one of us, must do something more than just to shout, I am umtana, I am athoraya, I am nationalist or I am whatver.

Let us hope and pray that things will not stay as they are, as Jesus said,

"....THE MEN OF NINEVEH WILL RISE UP AGAIN ....."

Indeed they will. Nineveh fell but the men of Nineveh, the Assyrians, did not and will not fall.
We Ought to Endeavour to 'Resurrect' Nineveh.

Your holiness, I wish you long life. And also may Christ be always with you in the Holy Task, with all its formidable responsibilities, that you have embarked on. Furthermore, I want to say

Shlama o Burkateh To All The Assyrians of the World

Yours Faithfully, And Faithful To The Umta and Umra

Shooma Bet-Malik
