...let's imagine Dr Shamoun and Screws-Loose and Magpie and Aprim, Jassim, Hanna and all the rest of them are soldiers in an Assyrian militia. Let's turn the words they hurl back and forth into bullets and substitute a real "enemy" army for the fellow-Christians they hurl words at...let's make them bullets instead of insults...and produce a Muslim army opposing them.

...what happens?

Gathering together their weapons in preparation for a sortie...bullets come whizzing over their fortress walls...what do they do? Do they load up immediately and fire back? Do they plan a counter-attack? Hardly.

Based on their behavior to date, they retreat into their barracks, lock the forum doors and tell each other and write letters home to loved ones saying what they WOULD do if only they COULD do it. Soon they aren't even firing back...just huddled over their letters home, saying what OUGHT to be done and how they would attack, if they dared.

That's what I wanted to show. As usual, they did 90% of my work for me. That explains how I can go on year after year..it isn't as exhausting as it appears because there's no real adversary...just cotton candy which, I admit, is messy and gooey and "polite"...but hardly an obstacle.
