...here it is again....a professor thinks he's solved "the problem"...that the old tablet from the borders of Assyria written in Luwian, proves the words mean the same because in THEIR language they refer to Assyrians as "Sur"...and since they are talking about the Assyrians, obviously Surian means the same as Assurian.

..in the how-can-smart-people-be-so-stupid contest, with Ben Carson in the lead, comes this professor. If the word for Assyrian in Luwian was "Donk", it would not mean the Assyrians themselves called themselves DONK.....all it means is that people have different names, in their different languages, for things.

..in French, the Americans are called "les Americains"...in other languages they are called "Assholes"...and yes, this proves that "Asshole" is another name for Americans...but, unless you can show that Americans call THEMSELVES Assholes, or Donks, or Les Americains, you haven't proven what you think you have.

I'm sure several peoples had a name for the Assyrians, in their own languages...that doesn't mean that the Assyrians called THEMSELVES by those names.

Until someone can show that the ancient Assyrians referred to THEMSELVES as Sur...nothing has been "proved".

The word "Syrian" was coined by the Greeks...they translated "Arameans" into Syrians...don't ask me why...they just did. As proof of this the Oxford English Bible has, since the 1970s, gone back to calling the Greek "Syrians", Arameans...look it up.

In our language, and maybe Greek too, placing an "a" in front of a word distinguishes it from the word, without the "a" in front....a-political means NOT political.....a-sexual means NOT sexual.....and so on. Since the Greeks decided to call the Arameans "Syrians"...they probably coined the word "A-Syrians" meaning those who are NOT Syrians, not Arameans, in other words.

We don't really know what the ancients called themselves, but they sure as shit didn't borrow a word for themselves from the Luwians. If a tablet appears from an Assyrian to anyone else in which HE refers to his people as the "Sur", THEN we might have a meaningful discussion.
