...just how does the discovery of that 8th century BC inscription prove that when we, today, say Syrian or Suraye, we really mean, and meant all along, Assyrian?

It looks like clutching at straws. In the first place there is no indication that the Luwians went right along using Syrian for Assyrian for 2800 years, in fact they disappeared from history long ago...and since we assyrians forgot all about Assyrian history, except for the Jewish history book known as the bible, and never knew about the Luwians and their quaint ways of spelling, until a few years ago...how does this discovery about ancient miss-spelling prove anything about modern claims?

Why on earth would the Assyrians drop their own spelling for that of the Luwians? That would mean that for the next 2800 years remnants of the Assyrians called THEMSELVES Syrians...because we came into the modern era calling ourselves by that Luwian name for Assyrians; SURAYE and NOT Ashuraye...we only began using Ashuraye after WW I....and not before.

What our assyrians want to say when confronted with the fact that in all our references to ourselves and our families and history we ALWAYS said Suraye and not Ashuraye, that we REALLY meant Assyrian...all along. For proof they give us this inscription....but the evidence they submit doesn't come close to proving the case.

Since we never KNEW about that Luwian/Phoenician inscription for over 2000 years...how can we say this proves our claim? And just when, in history, did the Assyrians begin referring to themselves as Syrians? Or Syrians AND Assyrians? All the evidence shows that using both names only started after WW I....obviously we concede that point or we wouldn't be making such a big deal out this discovery...but this discovery only tells us about Luwian spelling...that's all.

Our assyrians want to say that the Luwian term for us from 2800 years ago is what our people prefered to call themselves for all those centuries, for over 2000 years! And why? because the ancient Luwians miss-spelled our name.
